Gulmarg Day Trip from Srinagar: What to Plan

Gulmarg is about 54–56 km from Srinagar by road, with published drive estimates ranging from an hour and a half to about two hours.

The Divisional Commissioner Kashmir gives both a 54 km road distance and a separate 60 km description, while the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering gives 56 km and estimates about two hours for the journey.

These figures make a day trip possible, but the drive takes a meaningful part of the day. Allow time for the return journey as well as your plans in Gulmarg; the road route passes through Tangmarg, with a 12 km stretch from Tangmarg to Gulmarg.

Taxis are available from Srinagar Airport for travel toward Gulmarg, according to the Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering. If you are starting elsewhere in Srinagar, arrange your transport around the drive estimates and make a return plan before setting out.

Winter conditions can affect the final stretch: some taxis may not be able to reach Gulmarg. The institute describes hiring a vehicle to Tangmarg and arranging a 4×4 or snow chains for the remaining road when conditions require them. Snowfall can make the Tangmarg–Gulmarg drive suitable for a strong 4×4 or a vehicle fitted with snow chains.

Gulmarg is described as a winter skiing destination, and the area is covered in snow in winter. Snow can also affect the road between Tangmarg and Gulmarg, so your transport plan may need to account for a 4×4 vehicle or snow chains.

The Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering also notes that monsoon landslides may disrupt travel between Udhampur and Srinagar. Check current road and travel conditions before choosing your departure and return plans.

An overnight stay is worth considering if you want more time for the Gondola and Gulmarg’s other sights without fitting them around the drive in both directions. The published journey estimates alone amount to about three to four hours of driving round trip, before time in Gulmarg or any delays.
